An After Dinner's Sleep

An After Dinner's Sleep

Description

An After Dinner’s Sleep, by Gill Lambert, Maria Preston and Hannah Stone (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2015).

This poetry collection is the first Wordspace imprint, a collaboration between Leeds Trinity University and Indigo Dreams Publishing. The book comes out of a successful performance original poetry at the Ilkley Literature Fringe. “Three powerful female voices accompany us, with tenderness and humour, as we journey from birth to death – from the first stirrings in the womb to the last laboured breath of a loved one – with all the love, loss and laughter in-between. Profound yet intimate; these poems touch the very heart of what it means to live.”  - Siobhan MacMahon

Dark Doors

Dark Doors

Description

Dark Doors, by L.M.A. Bauman-Milner (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2015).

A Wordspace imprint.  In this gloriously disturbing debut collection, LMA Bauman-Milner proves herself a mistress of the macabre. From the demonic to the demented, the ghostly to the ghastly, her stories take a scalpel to the physiological and psychological viscera of human (and inhuman) deviancy.  Dark Doors will admit you to some dark places.  Enter if you dare.  – Martyn Bedford.

Inspirations

Inspirations

Description

Inspirations: A Space for Words, edited by LMA Bauman-Milner, John Gledhill and Oz Hardwick (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2015).

Wordspace began life as a monthly open mic night in Horsforth (Leeds), with a visiting writer and plenty of room to try out poetry, prose, comedy, sketches, magic, music, or anything else participants brought to share.  Run by a fluid aggregation of staff and students from Leeds Trinity University, it quickly established itself as one of the most welcoming spoken word nights in the area. Words, however, have a habit of taking on lives of their own and moving into other spaces. You can now, for example, subscribe to the Wordspace Radio channel on YouTube! And there is the book you are holding; the second Wordspace publication with Indigo Dreams Publishing. Inside, you will find a hive of words, voices buzzing with life, bearing both honey and the occasional sting. They have been contributed by Wordspace regulars, visiting writers, Creative Writing BA and MA students, and writers from across Yorkshire who have been drawn to Leeds Trinity University for events such as our annual Writers’ Festival.  In this anthology, established writers sit comfortably – or occasionally uncomfortably – alongside those whose voices are just starting to be heard. There’s flash fiction, formal verse, free verse, horror and humour. As with all Wordspace projects, no writer or genre is privileged, but I think you’ll find every piece gathered here well worth reading and rereading. This is a space for words to do their stuff: jump in and join them. – Oz Hardwick.

Journeys

Journeys

Description

Journeys: A Space for Words, edited by Stephanie Buick, Lucy Brighton and Oz Hardwick (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2016).

Journeys: A Space for Words is the second annual Wordspace Anthology with Indigo Dreams Publishing. - Our lives present us with an infinite number of journeys, from the first faltering steps of a toddler to the fading shuffle towards the end of life.  A journey could be a shift in dynamic between two people, a mood swing from tears to laughter, or that bright moment when confusion becomes clarity.  The electrical impulses being fired as you’re reading this are travelling along a myriad of neural pathways in your brain, lighting it up with images and ideas.  There are pieces here dealing with universal themes such as love, loss, growing up and growing old.  And there are other interpretations: the journey of a missing scalpel; a stormtrooper at a service station, and a galloping wine bottle.  All in a rich range of poetry and prose.  – Stephanie Buick and Lucy Brighton.

Portmanteau - Wordspace Anthology

Portmanteau - Wordspace Anthology

Description

Portmanteau, edited by Esther Dreher, Ethan Lowe and Oz Hardwick (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2016).

Portmanteau is the third annual Wordspace Anthology with Indigo Dreams Publishing. The social and political world, like its geological foundation, is always in a state of flux; yet few would deny that the twenty-first century has thus far witnessed a greater degree of fragmentation than has been experienced in many years.  On a local scale, the division between rich and poor in the UK continues to widen, with a concomitant widening of the gap between political Left and Right.  This is, of course, playing out against Brexit, a fracture in the EU which threatens further aftershocks and fissures within the seemingly precariously ‘United’ Kingdom.  For all its paradoxical divisions, however, Brexit has paradoxically furnished us with a whole vocabulary of words which weld concepts together.  Apart from Brexit itself, other portmanteau terms include Brexiteer, Bremainer, Bremoaner, and so on.  In the light of this linguistic curiosity, the editors of this collection put out a call for writers to engage with the idea of the portmanteau itself, in order to create, rather than divide.  Some chose to focus on the overtly political, while others looked to language, genetics, philosophy, relationships … and, of course, suitcases.  Guided by the twin principles, that language not only describes the world, but also creates it, and that every creative act is inherently political, the editors offer this collection of new poetry and prose as a small drawing together, a community of words – a wormunity, if you like – something to share as the Conselfservative government pulls itself apart.

Season of Myths

Season of Myths

Description

Season of Myths by Amina Alyal (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2016).

A Wordspace imprint.  In Season of Myths we are immersed and afloat in the ‘deciphering stream’ of world mythologies brought vividly to life, with all of their complexities, horrors and magical transformations.  These poems, drawn from tales that linger ‘like stains, in a watery map,’ bridge eons, speaking as much about our contemporary experience as they do of the classical and tribal worlds. – Bob Beagrie.
